A Zero waste bathroom is easy enough to put together but it may not happen like you think. Concepts like “zero Waste” and “Minimalism” aren’t lifestyles that happen over night and they have no final destination. They’re ever evolving because life is ever evolving. They happen a little at a time, as needs arise.
When I first learned of zero waste, I wanted to dive in head first. Zero waste bathroom supplies and routines are one of the main areas you see of zero waste on the internet, so it was the first thing I started tinkering with.
I felt like such a failure for a long time because I was having trouble figuring things out. Why wasn’t all of my stuff eco friendly yet!? Why have I not converted to that!? Why am I STILL using THIS??? First of all, this consciousness induced stress is a real thing. I wrote about it over here.
I’m hard on myself. Just as many people who are awake and conscious are. These lifestyle areas place a lot of pressure on people to do more, do more, be better. But we’re unrealistically hard on ourselves.
Yes, do better, be better. But where you are now is FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC. You’re here, you’re aware. That’s better than a shit ton of other people on the planet. You’re doing great. Converting your way of doing things takes time. A little at a time.
I was really hard on myself to do EVERYTHING NOW. in the beginning. Don’t be like me. It’s stressful. Start where you are and add to it, brick by brick.
And now, without further ado, I present to you, my zero waste supplies and routines!
Zero Waste Bathroom
Safety Razor
A safety razor is the epitome of your zero waste bathroom care items. If you don’t know what one is, it is one of those metal, old time-y looking razors. They twist open to place a single razor blade inside and then twist close to hold it in place. They generally come with a stand since hanging them upright is the best way to dry them.
I love mine. A pack of razor blades is about $2.50 which is crazy insane cheap compared to the $12+ for ONE single use plastic multi bladed razor.
Here’s a secret: You only need one blade. Multiple blades is just a marketing ploy to get you to pay more.
Single use plastic anything is terrible for the world. And this switch not only makes a great impact on the world but on your wallet as well!
If you use a residue leaving shaving cream, make sure you wash it all off after use or it’ll start to rust.
Dry brush
If you don’t know about dry brushing, I have a whole post about it here. It’s a great, ancient Ayurvedic self care practice that exfoliates the skin, detoxes the lymphatic system, eases anxiety and REDUCES CELLULITE! Yess ayha!
Dry brushing is a must before the shower.
Crystal deodorant
I tried a couple of nontoxic deodorant options and the crystal was by far my absolute favorite! The one I use to use was just a stand alone block. No extra plastic or waste and it came with a bamboo holder which kept any residue contained.
But I have tile floors. And on multiple occasions I dropped it and it shattered. I used the sharp shards best I could until it was impractical and unusable. Then I ordered another but this time I bought one that has the crystal in a deodorant case so that it wouldn’t shatter when dropped. It’s less ideal from a zero waste stand point but makes sense for me and since it lasts forever, it’s still better (for both the earth and the person using it) than commercial deodorants.
I have noticed that the plastic one holds onto bacteria like the free standing one didn’t. It smells like BO but I don’t so we’re good.
To use: simply wet and apply after showers to keep the bacteria that cause the smells from growing.
Bamboo tooth brush
Bamboo toothbrushes keep lots of pesky plastic out of the landfills and oceans. I switched to them about a year ago. They came in a pack of ten off amazon and I’m just now getting down to the last of them between 2 people.
There’s lots of options to choose from and some of them are pretty cool looking!
Here’s the zero waste toothpaste I use to make and used for years before I switched over to doTERRA’s OnGuard toothpaste.
No Poo
My shower routine has become super simple and eco friendly since I switched over to “No Poo”. Post on that here. Since I’m not using shampoo or conditioner anymore, I’m not using up those plastics that not only the shampoo comes in but that are also in the product itself.
My shower’s are also a lot shorter since I’m only washing my hair twice a week verses the previous every other day. That saves on water which is also a great eco-conscious thing!
Boar Bristle Brush
My No poo lifestyle does call for a boar bristle brush which has it’s pros and cons in the eco friendly world. On one hand, it’s not plastic and it is bamboo, so that’s great. On the other hand, the bristles are from a boar which is great that it’s not synthetic but also horrible because it’s probably not ethically sourced.
Grey areas. Grey areas everywhere..
