Hip pain was always my first and last symptom of pregnancy. With my son, my hips didn’t stop bothering me until I was several months postpartum and only then because I started going to the chiropractor.
I had terrible hip pain with all three of my pregnancies. The last one was lesser than the first two because, I assume anyway, by then I had learned a few things.
Hip pain during pregnancy is caused by the hormone Relaxin which helps to loosen our joints so that baby can make it’s grand entrance through the pelvis. It can cause us some discomfort during the process though.
Chiropractor
It is absolutely safe to go to the chiropractor while you’re pregnant! I didn’t know this with my first two pregnancies but with my third, I went roughly once a month until the last trimester when I went about once a week.
It helps keep the hips loose and the body aligned. Proper alignment in the body can allow for a smoother labor and delivery. Try and find a chiropractor who specializes in pregnancy. If you’re in the Athens/Huntsville area, I highly recommend Dr. Trent Parsons.
It doesn’t fix the hip pain completely. Nothing will. But it helps tremendously!
Foam top mattress
When I was pregnant with my son, my hips hurt so badly that I couldn’t sleep. We got a memory foam top mattress for our bed which took the pressure off of my hips and helped sooo much.
No foam top mattress
When I was pregnant with my daughter, three years later, we still had the memory foam top mattress on the bed. Around half way through my second trimester, my hips were bothering my despite of it.
I decided to take it off just to see if it would help, and it did! She’s five months currently and we haven’t put it back on yet. Sometimes you just have to experiment with these things to see what works best for you in your current situation.
Epsom salt baths
Magnesium deficiency can increase hip pain. Soaking in an epsom salt bath can help replenish the body of magnesium as well as help take some pressure off of the hips. I took one of these baths for my pregnancy hip pain as much as possible.
Especially later in my pregnancies. Every couple of days if not every day. Make time to relax, Mama.
Massages
I had an amazing massage therapist who knew exactly what to do for pregnancy hip pain! I didn’t even know I was going to get that lucky when I went in there for a basic prenatal massage! She did wonders though.
Massages also help to relieve stress, swelling, release toxins and feel great! If you’re in my area (Athens/Huntsville) I highly recommend Alley Woods at 3rd Avenue Salon in Ardmore!
Stacked pillow between the legs
Not just a single pillow, but a couple if it’s not a super fluffy one! You want your legs bent and parallel with one another. The wider, the more pressure is released.
Yoga
There are tons of Yoga poses and stretches to help with hip pain!!! Yoga saved my life from hip pain. Especially during my second pregnancy! Do a Pinterest search for “Hip openers” and live in them. This will probably get you the most relief.
A few other things that may help:
- Sitting on a birthing ball.
- Bounce, swirl your hips in figure eights, round and round, side to side and front to back.
- Sleeping upright, like in a recliner.
- Changing positions often during the night.
- Support pillows
- Lay on your side with a pillow behind you slightly propping up your butt and one supporting your belly.
- Belly support like Rock tape.
- Swimming
- Deep Blue essential oil rub.
- Frankincense mixed with coconut oil massaged into the hips.
- Keeping active with lite exercise.
- Walking or cleaning is great.
Good luck Mama! I hope this provides you with some relief! I know how uncomfortable hip pain can be when you’re growing tiny humans!
Best vibes always,
S.S.Blake
