The 5th insight introduces us to a different state of awareness and another perception of the world. Once our main character faces death and somehow miraculously survives, all sense of fear and self melt away to leave only that from the outside world.
He is no longer absorbed in his inside world and can perceive the magnificence of the world he is a part of. He feels the oneness in all things, having a vision of being a part of the Earth that he walks upon. Partaking in the same energy that flows through and around everything.
He sees through time and space. From the vastness of the universe down to the smallest molecule and how it all began. He understands the progression of life and how different vibrations lead way to different states of existence. Suddenly understanding who we are on this planet and why.
We find that this state of awareness has long been known as “Mystical Consciousness” and is the key to ending worldly conflict. For in this state, we are receiving our energy from the great source of it all and content in our positions in life.
Gaining Energy From Food
We are taught here that the first way of gaining energy is through food. That in order to receive the energy properly from the food, we must appreciate both the gift of it and properties of it.
We know this as mindful eating. “Taste is the doorway” we’re told in the story as the monks are observed over chewing their food deliberately. The tastes and textures must be noticed and enjoyed. Gratitude must be given to the food for it’s nourishment.
We pray over food before it is consumed in order to make it a sacred experience. Food, when consumed by us, combines with us to become a part of our minds, bodies and souls. It becomes one with us and is not separate from us in any way. Forming our very cells and sharing it’s energy with us.
We must attune that energy to as positive as we can since you want to be consuming positive energy for the best effects. This is also why sustaining from animal products is important in the book. As that energy is often times negative and full of fear due to the conditions subjected to the animal and the conflict of killing another sentient being in order to obtain their energy.
We see the contrast in the book of both meat eaters and non meat eaters. With the meat eaters being limited in their abilities to properly see and manipulate the energy around them and the non meat eaters doing so with ease. No one is criticized for their choices here. We are simply made aware of the contrast.
The Process of the 5th Insight
The 5th insight tells us that taking in food this way is only the first step. When we are gaining proper energy from mindful eating, we become more sensitive to the energy around us and are more able to see and feel it.
From here, we must open to the energy around us. Connect to it through gratitude and appreciation similar to seeing the fields that we learned about in the 3rd insight.
Once connected, we must allow ourselves to be filled up by the surrounding energy through tuning into the emotion of love.
“You allow love to enter you. But to do this you must position your mind by remembering what [love] felt like and try to feel it again.” A monk explains to our character on page 105.
This is a visualization meditation. The focus must be on the present and feelings and emotions are the tools to the opening and receiving of the energy around us.
When we feel drained, we must take a moment to refuel our energy in this way. Our main character uses the nature around him to tune into the right feelings and emotions. When you fully notice the beauty of the life that surrounds you, gratitude and appreciation for being a part of it all and the love of it are easy to find.
