Ok, so, oils = good. Gotcha. Now what do I do with them? There are a lot of ways you can use oils.
- Diffusing them
- Rubbing them on with a carrier oil
- Taking them internally
- Using them for cleaning
- Smell them
- Cook with them
- Make things with them
Ok, great. So How do I do those things?
Let us begin.
Using essential oils in a diffuser
You’ll need a diffuser for this one, although makeshift DIY ones can be found on Pinterest. Diffusers are little devices that you put a few ounces of water in with drops of essential oils. The diffuser disperses the oil into the air and fills the room with it’s aromatic benefits.
There’s usually a fill line in them for the water amount. As for the oils, 3 drops for 1 oil is the base line average.
When creating blends, you can do 1-3 drops per oil. There’s really no way to do this incorrectly. You can combine any oil you like in your diffuser. There are a few “hot oils” that can be irritating to the nasal cavities but just remember, less is more.
It’s really all about experimentation. Find what you like. Play with it. All oils can be diffused.
There are some rumors about the dangers of diffusing oils with animals. Remember: all oils are not created the same.
When using essential oils, always:
- Diffuse in open areas
- Don’t go over board; 6 drops is average when using multiple oils. 10 is too many.
- Take breaks. You don’t need to run your diffuser 24/7 (I tell myself as I notice mine turned off)
- When diffusing around babies/animals: Less is best
- Less is more
I’m simple. I like to diffuse Lemon. I don’t often venture away from it but when I do, I opt for some of doTERRA’s special made blends like Serenity, Elevation or On Guard.
Always keep things simple, Temple.
Using essential oils topically
This is where our FCO (fractionated coconut oil) comes in handy. Dilute 1-2 drops in FCO and rub into skin. If you don’t have FCO or you have a tree nut allergy, any skin safe oil will work (not vegetable oil). Almond, Avocado and Jojoba oils are my favorite alternatives.
General places to put it:
- Wrists
- Back of Neck
- Chest
Specific places to put it:
- Where ever the ailment is.
- i.e. Head hurts: put on head.
- Hand hurts: put on hand. etc
This is where roller balls come in handy. Roller balls are little 10oz tubes of already diluted oils and FCO for convenience. All your DIY tools can be bought through doTERRA for extra convenience.
If you’re making roller balls for adults, 20-30 drops topped off with FCO is good.
If you’re making them for kids, about 10 drops is good.
If you have sensitive skin, try the kid’s ratio. (No shame. This is what I have to do.)
Always dilute more for kids and make sure you know which ones are safe for babies and littles.
Be sure you know the cautions on the ones you’re using. For example, Fennel can’t be used 10 days in a row as it can cause excessive flow through the urinary tract and Peppermint can lower milk supply in nursing moms.
Knowing these cautions isn’t hard. You don’t have to know everything about every oil right now. Take it one at a time.
I highly recommend the book Essential Life for info on cautions, safety’s and all that good jazz. As it’s one of two that I use daily. You can find it at this site (af) under the menu tab “Essential Life”. Use coupon code SBLAKE5 to get $5 off a $25+ order.
Using Essential oils Internally
With this one, it’s very important to know which ones are safe and which ones aren’t.
On doTERRA oils, there will be a supplement chart on the bottle if it can be taken internally and not one if it can’t. I don’t know how other folks keep theirs straight since doTERRA is the only guys I deal with. You can also reference Essential Elements to know which ones are safe and which ones aren’t.
You can take oils internally by:
- Taking 1 drop in 4oz of water as a shot
- Placing 1-2 drops in a veggie capsule and taking
- 1-2 drops in cooking & food prep
- Placing 1-2 drops in your tea or water
Cleaning and DIY products are a whole other subject in and of themselves that we could talk about for ages.
