Our ancestors didn’t have access to all the foods year around like we mostly do. They ate with the seasons and their body (Our bodies) adapted to this way of life.
If you pay attention, you still do this on a certain level, unconsciously. You’ll find that in the spring and summer, you desire lighter meals. Probably leafy greens, fruits, watery and cold vegetables. Whereas in the fall and winter you’ll begin to lean more towards the warm starches like stews, potatoes and meats.
We need those heavier meals in the colder months to keep us warm.
It’s also better environmentally to eat seasonally. When we’re flowing with the natural order of things, there’s less disruption in ecosystem. Less pollution from transporting out of season produce and the overall quality doesn’t suffer.
I’m kinda new to the whole seasonal eating thing but I’ll start posting these regularly and as I learn, I’ll make sure you’re getting the information as well! So make sure you sign up to The Temple Tablet to get your seasonal updates and checklists!

Plan for Your October Seasonal Eating
I’m going to admit, there’s a few things on this list that I have never heard of, much less ate or COOKED!
But we stagnate in life if we’re not trying new things. Sit down on Sunday or Monday or whenever you get a free minute and plan out what you’re going to cook this week.
- Where can you replace some of your items with the above?
- What can you take above and make a meal out of?
- Does Pinterest have any good looking recipes with the above you can try?
I highly highly highly recommend meal planning. If we know what we’re cooking this week, we know what we need to buy and nothing gets wasted. Food or money wise.
Just looking at the list, right off the top of my head;
- Baked Sweet potatoes are delicious
- Apples and carrots are great raw for snacking
- Baked winter squash is great
- You can make a stew
I slice and dice peppers, mushrooms and onions and saute them up for salads, sandwhiches, quesadillas or just on their own! I do try and do gluten free as often as I can so keep in mind my sandwhiches and quesadillas may be a bit different from yours.
Black eyed peas are great on their own or you can use them in lue of meat in tacos, burritos, etc. I dunno, I’m not the cook you want to follow and this is not a food blog. I’ve been trying really hard especially as of late to learn some new things in the kitchen but, honestly, bless my own heart and my husband’s and my kids…I try.
