With my son, who’s now three, we carried your typical diaper bag with us everywhere. It was jam packed with things that we would go months without using. Things we would forget we had. It was a catch all for lost items and an impossible maze when you needed something.
When my daughter was born, we started out with a similar set up but in backpack form to keep us hands free. Only a couple of months in, though, I ditched it.
Truth is, unless you’re packing them to stay all day with a sitter or relative or something, they don’t need any of that stuff. It’s a cluttered waste of space that causes more stress than you probably even realize. Sure it’s nice to have EVERYTHING you could possibly need at your disposal at all times but is it worth lugging around that heavy, bulky, cluttered bag just to have baby q-tips in case you need them?
My alternative has been a simple, basic canvas bag tailored to the specific outing we’re venturing on.
My Minimalist’s diaper bag method
As part of my leaving-the-house routine, I pack a bag. I usually don’t need much more than diapers and wipes, but the contents do depend on where we’re going.
Keep in mind, I also breastfeed. So that knocks out of otherwise needed supplies. Literally all I need to feed my baby is myself. Talk about handy and hard to leave at home!
Minimalist’s Diaper Bag To the grocery store:
- 1 diaper
- Wipes
- Burp cloth
- Pack of snacks
- Change of clothes (In a Ziploc bag or the like)
Minimalist’s Diaper Bag To run errands most of the day:
- 2-3 diapers
- Wipes
- Burp cloth
- Snacks
- Change of clothes (In a Ziploc bag or the like)
Uncluttered your space. Including your mind. White space leaves room for what you want to come into being. #minimalism

Minimalist’s Diaper Bag To drop off at grandparents house (Or babysitters/etc):
- 4-5 diapers
- Wipes
- Burp cloth
- Snacks and food
- Change of clothes
Other items, such as diaper rash cream or remedies can be thrown in if you’re having a particular problem at that point in time but unless baby is staying the night away from home, nothing more than these things will probably ever be needed.
Granted, we did carry our bouncer seat with us everywhere for the first 4-5 months of her life because that’s the only way she would sleep. But that’s an individually tailored type of item and not at all the norm.
My Bag
All of that being said, I have my own little bag I carry around with me all of the time. It’s not necessarily part of the diaper bag because it operates independently from it but compliments it when needed.
In it is:
- Hand sanitizer
- Lotion
- Chapstick
- Stainless steel straw
- Essential oils
I admittedly probably go a little overboard with the amount of oils I carry but I always seem to find myself in a position where I really wish I had a particular one. I’m trying to cut them down a bit.
If my son has a runny nose I may bring an extra burp cloth or 2.
Be practical.
- What are the chances you’re going to use that thing?
- Is it a must have or a might need?
The less you pack the lighter the bag is going to be and the easier things are going to be to find. Having a diaper bag that’s not cluttered feels so much better.
