The entertainment industry gets a really bad wrap for being mindless. No doubt, there is a lot of mindless nonsense in the industry but it’s not all bad. There are tons of shows and movies out there that are wildly inspiring entertainment, and anything that inspires has a positive impact on the world.
If you know me at all, it’s obvious that I stay wrapped up in entertainment in some form. Whether it be movies, shows or books, I’m always off on some grand adventure through dangerous lands, battling evil with elves, riding dragons or playing with magic.
It may come as a surprise then that I, for one, feel like television should be extremely limited.
We have 2 TVs because we upgraded our 32 inch and moved it upstairs (because have you ever tried to split screen on a 32 inch tv?) but the one upstairs only hooks to Chromecast.
I use it to play educational things for our toddler such as Blippi. Honestly, if it weren’t for my husband’s sports, we’d probably cut our cable off.
My husband and I are huge fans of shows and movies though. They’re like stories in books but way quicker and easier to get through haha and can be super inspiring.
I’d like to give you a list of some inspiring entertainment that left me changed.
Cloud Atlas
I watched this movie 3 or 4 times in the same week when I first watched it. Which, if you didn’t know, is particularly impressive since it’s a 3+hour long movie.
It completely flipped my world upside down and had me just sitting and thinking about it for MONTHS afterwards. The depth of it is genius and awe inspiringly complex.
It really speaks volumes to how time changes everything things, how everything is connected, how everything has an origin and how even the smallest of people can make a WORLD of difference.
Just thinking about it right now swells excitement and awe in my chest.
I even wrote a paper on this movie in college. I highly recommend you watch it. It’s my all time favorite movie.
Idiocracy
This movie inspired me to do more to push our world in a positive direction. I highly recommend it to everyone. It’s funny and entertaining while warning us about a future that is terrifyingly possible.
It was originally one of the reasons I wanted 4 children (no more than 2 now haha).
It takes place in the future, in a world where intelligence has been completely bred out of humanity and the results it’s had on the earth and it’s people.
It’ll really make you wanna get your butt in gear on doing what you can to make the world a better place.
The OA
This is netflix original series. It’s not at all for the close minded or skeptical. If you’re open to possibilities though, it’ll have you awestruck and seeing through time, space and dimensions.
It’s about a woman who disappears blind and comes back able to see. It’s not like, an alien abduction story or anything. It tells an elaborate tale of the here after in a passionate, deep and mind blowing way.
It’ll leave you with 100 questions about reality. There’s really nothing like it that I’ve ever seen. YOU NEED TO WATCH IT.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
This is a cartoon series and I have proudly watched the entire thing three times over from start to finish as well as it’s predecessors.
It is my favorite animated series of all time and it is one of the most inspiring entertainment pieces I have ever found. It takes place in a world where people are divided by elements (basically race).
One kid has the fate/gift/job to bring them all together in peace and harmony.
I love the story (for TONS of reasons) mainly because this kid is just a kid. He doesn’t want all the power he has been given but CHOOSES to step up and do what he can to bring peace to the world.
It’s a show that promotes kindness, acceptance, spirituality, oneness in all things and working together. I love love love it. It’s sequels are also amazing.
There is no movie. I repeat, THERE IS NO LIVE ACTION MOVIE. Don’t watch that thing. It’s a disgrace to the series.
Stargate Atlantis
I have watched this series 3 times over as well. I’ve also watched the prequel, Stargate SG-1 and predecessor, Stargate Universe but Stargate Atlantis will always be my favorite.
It’s adventurous and has all those great techy, space, new world things that Star Wars and Star Trek has (But way better, in my honest opinion).
It’s got strong, intelligent female main characters in roles of authority and leadership. It promotes peace and harmony among all races, species and cultures.
Has spiritual aspects and scientific ones and of course an awesome bad guy to shoot at and outsmart through the power of working together and what not. This series will always hold a special place in my heart.
