Dismantling culture’s complicity in trauma requires a collective effort to create a society that prioritizes healing, empathy, and cultural sensitivity. By critically examining cultural norms, fostering a culture of support, and promoting cultural understanding, we can begin to break the cycle of trauma and create a more just and compassionate world.
One of the primary mechanisms through which culture perpetuates trauma is through normalization. When traumatic experiences are normalized, they become accepted as inevitable or even desirable aspects of life, minimizing their perceived severity and hindering individuals from seeking help or healing.
This normalization often stems from historical narratives that glorify suffering or resilience in the face of adversity, inadvertently perpetuating the belief that trauma is an inescapable part of the human experience.
Furthermore, when societal norms emphasize individualism, self-reliance, and emotional suppression, individuals may feel as though they should be able to handle things on their own, discouraging them from seeking support or expressing their emotional needs. This can lead to internalized shame, isolation, and further perpetuation.
Encouraging sensitivity, humility, compassion and safety in those around you is crucial to us beginning to flip this narrative. Along with this, recognizing the diversity of experiences and the limitations of one’s own perspective.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Josh Work, also known as The Emotional Support Viking, to discuss various topics on the subject of healing. How to come to terms with childhood trauma and choosing to end the perpetuation of it.
Some very emotionally heavy conversations were had and we thank Josh for trusting us with his story.
