Our outside reflects our inside. And Visa versa. It’s hard to feel fresh, alive and vibrant when the energy in our homes is toxic, suffocating and stale.
Our homes are an extension of us and our energy so it’s important to routinely clean and refresh the energy of our spaces.
It’s a concept in many cultures throughout history, for example: Feng Shui. Which most of us are familiar with in some form. Certain rules of colors, lines and ways of decorating that support the flow of energy.
Some Chinese respect the art of Feng Shui so deeply, that if they have great business success, they will forever keep their original house as is if they move into another as to not upset the energy.
Feng Shui is just one example of the MANY things you can do to cleanse the energy in your home. Keep in mind though, YOU are the magick here.
Your intention of cleansing your home is what’s going to make the biggest impact. The rest of this is just tools to channel that.
Crystal Grids
Crystal grids can be used both inside and outside to cleanse the energy in your home. You can use any sort of crystals you have although if you want to get specific and fancy with it, each crystal has it’s own aspects and can be used to amplify specific intentions when matched.
Examples:
- Selenite – Protection
- Onyx – Protection
- Fluorite – Focus / Creativity
- Aventurine – Abundance
- Smoky Quartz – Negative energy / Anxiety
- Rose Quartz – Love / Relationships
Just to name a few. The list of types of crystals and their aspects goes on forever.
Clear quartz is your basic universal amplifier that also doesn’t require much clearing or cleansing upkeep. It’s also sun and water hearty which means you can use it outside or any other location you like.
Some crystals become damaged in water or sunlight (i.e. Amethyst, Selenite) so make sure you’re taking care of the ones you’re using appropriately. It’s counter-intuitive to be gridding with decaying crystals. That’s more like insulting the energy in your home rather than upleveling it.
Place your crystals strategically to cleanse the energy in your home:
- Outside, encircling the home or entire property
- In a single grid placed somewhere central in your home
- Over doorways / On window frames
- In every corner of every or all high traffic rooms
It’s really up to you on how you would like to use this method of clearing the energy in your home. You can read some more details on crystal grids here.
Intention Jar to cleanse the energy in your home
You can place an intention jar in a high traffic area of your home. Do this by taking any sort of glass jar with a lid and filling it with either:
- Salt for cleansing / purification / protection
- Sugar for sweetness in energy / relationships / communication
Again, it’s all about your intentions with it. Make sure those are clear.
- Which best suits your home and circumstances?
- Are there any other things coming to your mind that may be added to your jar?
For example, certain herbs carry aspects just like with our crystals. You can add crystals to your jar, pieces of paper with prayers or intentions inscribed upon them, little trinkets. Here’s a blog post on how to create an abundance jar.
Once your jar is ready, place it somewhere you want it to get to work, keep it dusted and give it a shake every now and then to keep it fresh.
Sage
I love love love that science is coming together with the ancient traditions of our spiritual ancestors. The Native American practice of ‘smudging’ has recently been found to have scientific backing. Something about positive and negative ions.
Sage is most commonly used in this practice to cleanse the energy in your home although other herbs are sometimes used for various intentions.
Salt to cleanse the energy in your home
Salt’s qualities lie in purification and cleansing. It’s why you feel so refreshed bathing in the salt water of the ocean. We’ve already spoken about creating a jar, you can also use it (sparingly) to encircle your home, line doorways or windows.
Have you ever watched Supernatural? Sam and Dean make salt circles all the time. Same concept. Crushed eggshells can also be used in this way (and are very nutritious to your plants).
Cleaning / Dusting
Most people don’t like this one. They want the ‘fun’ stuff of crystals and salt spells to cleanse the energy in the home. Sometimes though, the simplest magick is the most powerful.
Again, the energy of your atmosphere effects the energy of the internal and eternal. Cleaning your home is one of the first things I recommend focusing on if you’re trying to rework the energy of your life. It seems like an obvious starting point but many of us avoid it.
Make sure you dust your ceilings and walls too. They may not look dusty but you’d be surprised what you can’t see. It doesn’t have to be time consuming. A quick once over with a duster works wonders!
Routinely clean under furniture, all those corners that get forgotten about. This is where minimalism comes in super handy. The less useless stuff you have, to the less you have to clean around and the less time you spend managing it all.
Clear any clutter that may have piled up. I know you don’t want to mess with it, but getting started is the hardest part, it’ll probably take you less than a day and it will FEEL SO MUCH BETTER when you’re done.
Rearrange Furniture to Cleanse the Energy in Your Home
If a room starts feeling stale, rearranging the furniture and decor is sure to liven things up. If the space is too small for much variety, move it all to clean the floor underneath and then putting it back should shake the energy up enough for you.
You may be surprised how effective it is to simply change around one or two things. My husband never knows what the house is going to look like when he comes in from work. This is something I learned from my grandmother.
Try to make sure you have an easy walkway through the home for both yourself and the flow of energy. Think of it like a stream or river that can be damned up. You don’t want anything restricting the flow. Right angles also hinder flow.
You also want to try to set things up to where your back will never be to a door. You want all seating facing the entrances as though to welcome all that comes in.
Candles and Essential Oils
Smells are a great way to effect the energy in your home. Using essential oils can be tuned to the plant’s properties. Candles are useful with their fire. Fire cleanses and creates a calming ambiance to the place. Don’t be afraid to use them liberally (AND SAFELY).
Keep in mind too, though, that synthetic fragrances can be harmful. Try to stick to naturally scented, soy or fragrance free. You can get a whole pack of tealight candles for little to nothing. Like $3 for 50 or something. Go crazy.
Sunlight and Open Windows to cleanse the energy in your home
So, this one is pretty self explanatory. Open the windows when the weather permits if you safely can. Let the wind cycle out all of the air in your home and bring in new and fresh.
Sunlight is also cleansing. The more you get in, the better. You’re essentially a fancy plant. You need that vitamin D, preferably unadulterated. Even windows filter some of the good stuff out.
- Bonus: Hang suncatchers in bright windows to invite rainbows in!
- Bonus: The more plants you can bring into your home, the more vibrant and full of life it’s going to feel
- Also: Organite. See video below for details
Holiday Bonus: Cinnamon Broom to Cleanse the Energy in Your Home
Some time around August-October you’ll probably start seeing those cinnamon scented old fashioned looking brooms popping up in your local grocery stores and what not (at least you will here in the south). They’re usually pretty cheap. Less than $10.
Use it not to sweep the floor but instead the energy that hovers about a foot ish or so above the floor. Hang it on a wall somewhere when you’re done and use it throughout the year whenever you feel the place needs refreshing.
Replace it next year with a new one. If you can safely, burn the old one as a symbol of your intentions to be out with the old and in with the new.

Hey Savannah! I love how relevant this was to my current state of mind.
I totally agree that having enough physical space or lack thereof affects one’s energy immensely. I’m the same with the long line of hoarders but have been trying in the past couple of years to gradually change that. I’ve never done spring cleaning, but i do that in bits over time. I’m tempted to try some of those tips though.
Enjoyed listening to the episode but will probably get back to the article later, I think there’s more info there.
So glad it resonated with you! I’ve never really subscribed to the spring cleaning either because to me it feels like “waiting until” and you’re right, we should just be doing it year around whenever the moment sparks! Thanks so much for taking the time to listen and comment!
