My Oral Hygiene Horror Story
Anyone who knows me knows I’ve had issues with my teeth for my entire life. I had severe anxiety because of several things but one of the big ones was definitely my smile, so I didn’t.
For years and years, I didn’t smile because I was ashamed of my teeth. It’s something I’ve come to accept about myself. I don’t like it by any means, but I hardly think about it any more which is a huge step in progress. Overcoming this obstacle in my self esteem despite being constantly reminded of it by family and bullies.
I was put in braces while I was still in elementary school, which was much too young. My teeth weren’t settled into where they were going to be yet, which means the braces didn’t do much good.
Despite years of wearing them, I still have a snaggletooth and my four front top teeth are mostly porcelain from the braces being tightened too much and too often. Some of the porcelain even fell out during a first date when I was 15! Talk about being embarrassed.
I pretty much just sat around and cried the entire time I had braces. Popping brackets off was a hobby of mine because they hurt so badly. They left scars in my cheeks (which I still have) and tongue for years after they were gone. It was one of the most miserable times in my life.
I’ve Learned Some Things About Oral Hygiene
I’ve learned that the perfectly straight, white teeth you see on tv isn’t the norm. Sure a lot of regular folks have “perfect” teeth but a whole lot of people don’t. Your worth is not defined by the condition of your teeth. How they look does not account for how intelligent you are. If they don’t meet someone’s standards, it only says things about the people that have those standards.
Also, crooked teeth are a trend in Japan so it’s really all about culture and perception. A flaw in one country is a thing of beauty in another. Anyway, I’ve learned a few things about teeth health during my struggle, that I would like to share with you.
Oil Pulling for Oral Hygiene
What is that you ask? Oil pulling is an ancient method of drawing out toxins and replacing them with vitamins and minerals. It’s used for dental heath as well as overall health.
1. First, take a tablespoon of your choice oil, generally coconut oil, into your mouth. (I like to keep a small container in the fridge because the texture of chewing the solidified coconut oil is personally pleasing)
2. You can stop here and swish it in your mouth for twenty minutes or…I like to go a step farther and drop either one drop of Frankincense or one drop of Clove essential oils into my mouth on top of the coconut oil for extra benefits.
3. Then, swish contents for 20 minutes or so, before spiting out.
Oil pulling reduces inflammation, kills bacteria and also whitens teeth. Aside from the dental benefits, coconut oil also has tons of properties that better overall health. It reduces risk of heart disease and boosts immune system function. Both Clove and Frankincense essential oils are known for their dental hygienic properties.
Ideally, you want to do this 2-3 times a week.
Homemade Toothpaste For Oral Hygiene
I started making my own toothpaste about three years ago. There are tons of toxic chemicals in commercial toothpastes that you really shouldn’t be putting into your body.
Nero-toxins and insecticides that may or may not cause cancer and contaminate are drinking water and poison animals and fish.
The stuff they put into these things are really terrifying and shouldn’t be legal. We want to believe that our scientists and governments would never allow anything harmful into something that we use so often. That we’re sophisticated enough not to poison ourselves.
Sadly, this isn’t true, but that’s a whole different blog post.
I see tons of DIY toothpaste recipes online. When I was searching for one, I had a difficult time. All of the ones I found were complicated with ingredients I had never heard of and couldn’t find. When I could find the ingredients they were super expensive.
So I decided to formulate my own. Simply. Such things don’t have to be complicated. Unless complication is your thing of course.
Three ingredients for your Oral Hygiene:
- Baking Soda
- Coconut oil
- Sea Salt
If you wish, you can also add a few drops of Frankincense or Clove essential oil for extra benefits or Peppermint essential oil for that commercial toothpaste feel.
Mix about 1/4 cup each of sea salt and baking soda in 1 cup coconut oil.
Baking soda for cleaning and whitening, coconut oil for vitamins, minerals & preservation. Sea salt for extra minerals plus to give the toothpaste some abrasive texture for getting plaque to easily brush away.
That’s it! Super simple right? You get all the benefits of commercial toothpaste (probably tons more) without all the toxins and chemicals that are harmful to your body.
This is a simple toothpaste that can be used without the slightest concern! It’s all of the benefits of vitamins, minerals as well as whitening without all of the concern of toxins! Simplicity at it’s best.
Not to mention it saves you money because all of these things are relatively cheap and have tons of uses.
- Baking Soda: $2.05
- Sea Salt: $2.05
- Coconut oil: $depends on how big a jar you want.
Ever since I implemented this routine with caring for my teeth I haven’t had the first problem.
Furthermore, in an end of the world situation, you’re going to want to know how to make your own oral hygiene products right? I don’t think dentists will be easy to find after all of that and you don’t want to be walking around trying to survive with a terribly achy tooth distracting you.

I made the toothpaste over the weekend and I’ve used it a few times. I started oil pulling back in January and did it for awhile and then stopped. I went to the dentist last week and found out I have 4 cavities. I re-started oil pulling after that visit and I want to try to reverse my cavities before my filling appointment in November.
I’m curious about the toothpaste ingredients. What is the sea salt supposed to do? The coconut oil and baking soda make sense to me.
Thank you for taking the time to read and try out the toothpaste! This article was one of the first I had ever written which means there was some outdated information that needed to be revised on it. For that I am deeply sorry. I have revised the entire article to reflect complete truth and I admit that I should have done it much sooner but had thought that it was lost in the abyss of the internet and wouldn’t be found. The sea salt is for abrasive purposes against plaque as well as extra minerals. I hope you found this helpful even though it probably isn’t the cure you’ve been hoping for. Again, I deeply apologize for any misinformation or inconveniences. If you have any questions or need help in anything please don’t hesitate to let me know! I aim to serve.
