Our world is a constant bombardment of noise and expectations that are always drowning out our intuition. These high demands and the stretching of our attention come to us first from external sources but then become an internalized part of our subconscious programming. This internalization keeps us moving within the confines of that which is already a familiar pattern of “safety”. Our intuition guides us to escape these limiting and often times unhelpful routines and habits but our brains sabotage us, screaming fear all the way.
To dig our intuition’s true power out from the dirt that is the clutter of modern day society, takes some practice. At first, the dirt wants to cave back in, but eventually, through consistency and perseverance, you do find the treasure beneath. Though it might still be quite dirty for a bit, the continued practice will restore the shine and gleam it once had when you were a child, before it got all murky from having to exist in this world with others.
Whereas we feel that in order to accomplish or gain something, more than what we’re already doing must be done, learning to trust our intuition requires doing less. In order for it to guide us back towards our own unique purpose, we have to give it the space to speak and be listened to. We have to allow ourselves the down time required to dig through our thoughts, emotions and traumas. For sure, we don’t want to do this because it can get a bit messy and scary. Sometimes taking us back to relive the trauma yet again.
Every fiber in our body says no to this. Why would we want to relive such an awful event again? Yet, reliving it is exactly what we’re doing every time it influences a present decision, action, word or thought. The holding onto this story that harmed us allows it to continue to harm us. The holding onto is innate and natural and takes actively prying it’s grips from us through intentional awareness.
Many people know that there’s mental and emotional work to be done in order to reach their goals (many people don’t, but the fact that you’re here reading this tells you which category probably you’re in). Our intuition is always guiding us through this process via our thoughts and emotions. It’s our natural desire to avoid these with distractions, suppression and projection. Allowing them to be explored and felt can be quite painful but sometimes it’s necessary to experience some pain in order to heal. Think cleaning a wound or resetting a bone. There’s no difference in this type of wound.
Only through the allowance of these thoughts and emotions and the active exploration of them, can we truly begin to heal and manifest the life we desire. Learning how to slow the hustle and create space for the processing of these past occurrences can finally lead us to a place of releasing their attachment to us. Dropping the weights of these happenings and all of the emotions accompanying them frees us up to move through life less cumbersomely.
Beginning –
Our culture and society has taught us not to follow our intuition and instead to simply fall in line with what every one else is doing. This leaves many of us to live our lives on autopilot, only to wake up one day and realize that we have no idea who we are and life is too short to not do what makes us happy.
“Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking” by Malcolm Gladwell says we spend most of our time talking ourselves out of our immediate gut reaction and thoughts.
People in our lives will try and talk us out of things that don’t make sense to them. If we listen, we may spend years going down the “wrong” path only just to land where our intuition told us ages ago to be. Loved ones mean well, but we can’t allow them to dictate our decisions.
Although this can be frustrating, eVeRyThInG hApPenS fOr A rEaSoN, right? Perhaps the detour led us down a path that taught us something unique to the integration of our future. We can’t spend our lives in regret or blame. Things happen and then it’s up to us to make the best of it and move on with what we have.
Do your best to only crowdsource things like a new dentist or hair dresser and never career, relationship or life paths. Everyone has an opinion but the most important one is yours. What are your instincts telling you about what’s popping up, all fear aside? Because most often there will be fear attached just because it’s different than what you’re use to and not necessarily because it’s dangerous.
We know innately what we should and shouldn’t be doing. It’s only when the brain gets involved that we begin second guessing what we know and feel. We convince ourselves we’re not sure out of fear.
Can you let go of who you were yesterday in order to experience who you are today? Learn to ebb and flow with the brand new moment of existence you’re always being presented with. The only constant is change. We’re always shapeshifting inside and out based on everything we consume, be it food, media or interactions with people and things.
When you can hold that mindset of always new-ness, a lot of the attachments that would normally hold you back no longer do because you’re free to be whomever you are today. It’s a liberation. The freedom to move forward and create the life you want.
11:15 –
One of the best things we can do to achieve this is to work on our own nervous systems so that when we are presented with these moments of fear yet potential possibility, our bodies aren’t freaking out at the shock of change. That’s why things like meditation and mindfulness can be such powerful tools. With an overly sensitive network (as so many of us have these days thanks to many common societal factors), we’re not only battling our minds for the truth but also our nervous systems.
When we enter these moments, we become stressed and everything feels constrictive. Our natural response is to get away from whatever we believe is triggering this feeling even if it may actually be something we want. Learning how to create space in our day to day, without these triggering moments, will help us to be more prepared when they occur so that we can stay calm and make intentional choices.
If you’re waiting for a moment without fear, you’ll never be able to take the leap to do the things you’re afraid of doing. You have to learn how to act in spite of the fear, because there is no such thing as the perfect moment for anything. One “wait until” will always turn into another because it’s a form of putting off in an effort to remain in safety, even if that safety is an illusion.
“Waiting until” xyz keeps you in a perpetual state of chasing because there’s always going to be another thing behind the achievement of the initial thing that you have to “wait until” again. You don’t need to wait until monday, the first of the month or year, until your bank account is xyz, until, until, until. Just go ahead and start. You’ll only learn and improve as you go. You’ll be so much prouder of yourself that you didn’t wait. The sooner you start, the sooner you can begin to see progress.
If you’re not careful, your brain will keep you stuck in your own pattern loops because that’s where it knows safety to be and safety is your brains number one priority. A lot of what keeps us stuck is our attachment to what we feel makes us who we are. We’re bad at letting go of things because we identify them as part of ourselves and we don’t ever wanna lose a part of ourselves, even if it isn’t a helpful piece.
Life is a giant cosplay. You can wake up every morning and decide you’re a brand new character and go about your day playing that part. You get to decide the script, the costume and for a large part, the plot. You can even change the back story if you want, if even for today. Who are you today? Design your character.
14:50 –
Being in creative response to now. Not the now that was yesterday or this morning but the now that is in presently in front of you. How do we work with this moment?
Master the art of letting go. Let go of trying to figure anything out. Let go of the past, let go of the future and everything in between. Divorce your past and the stories you’re holding onto there that are no longer serving you.
Think about who you would be if you had amnesia and no longer remembered the terrible things that had happened to you in the past. Sit with that idea and really imagine becoming that fresh, free person who only remembered the good things that have led up to this moment.
The best tool I have to offer for anything be it progress, releasing or healing is simply hyper awareness. Practicing mindfulness and meditation. People think that meditation is learning to silence your mind but it’s actually learning to control your thoughts. The silencing of the mind comes naturally later but is a laughable concept in the beginning to us all.
Instead, you want to intentionally distract yourself with focusing on your surrounds and present sensations. Choosing your thoughts carefully and purposefully and exploring how to get the desired emotions activated in this moment.
The power of the pause can help us find the yin we need to balance the yang energy that’s dominant in our go go go world. Learning how to pause in between every thought, movement, decision, task, etc. can cultivate a more spacious existence where calm and peace can then come into being.
“Slow and steady wins the race”, right? When we rush, we’re more likely to make mistakes, then these mistakes take us longer to correct than calmly and slowly doing the thing in the first place would have.
Our natural state is slower than society and media would have us believe. We’re meant to move slower than what we do these days and the constant rush of hustle culture, where you have to be productive to be worthy is quite literally making us all sick.
23:30 –
Many high performers fall into the trap of only allowing themselves rest and down time when they’re sick. This can create a psychosomatic pattern of becoming sick every time you need or want rest. I myself, as well as our guest here (and others I’ve had on) have experienced this exact phenomenon.
Is the mainstream world designed to hold us back? We set new years resolutions in the dead of winter when no one wants to do anything. The energy at this time of year is flat and dead. The astrological new year, however, is in the spring when everything is beginning to get some life in it. It makes since that we would evolve to hibernate in the winter when there’s not much to do aside from keep warm and survive, which brings us to the question of seasonal depression and whether or not it’s a natural response to that time of year.
The art of allowance. You have to learn how to give yourself permission without any external factors. Whether that’s permission to rest, be happy or follow the path that your intuition points you towards.
Less is more. When you do less, you have a better overview of what’s important and your priorities become more aligned. Most of us are doing more in an effort to achieve but it’s generally just busy work that isn’t actually chipping away at anything and may truthfully be just distracting us from the real work.
We keep ourselves busy to avoid our feelings and working on ourselves. There’s a safety in “not enough time.” We try to outrun our problems.
Those of who are guilty of this often times attempt to “do less” by adding in even more. Examples of this are forcing ourselves to go to classes to learn how to relax and do nothing. We’re always filling our time with scrolling, errands or what have you. Making time to do nothing when you feel you need it is invaluable to your health but make sure it’s actually restful.
Doing nothing is sometimes the hardest thing for us to do, but if we can allow just a few moments to breathe, relax and exist, we can find a powerful sense of clarity and rejuvenation on the other side that leaves us capable of achieving our goals.
39:10 –
When you do finally allow yourself to do nothing, your mind will begin to wonder around. Follow it, watch it. Notice what it’s pointing you towards. Get curious about it and analyze the emotions around the thoughts.
- Why are these emotions tied to this thought?
- Who gave me those?
- What thoughts and emotions do I prefer?
- How can I tie these new thoughts and emotions together?
This is where the work is that heals all things. You know, that whole “all of the answers are already within you” thing we so often hear in personal development and spiritual type helps. It’s also why most people can’t stand to sit still.
You heal by not running and hiding from your problems but by facing them head on and integrating them into who you are. Things happened and that does make them a part of who you are but that doesn’t mean they solely define you or have to influence the choices that you make now. They can be as big of a deal now as you decide they are, and that means as small of one as well.
What are these emotions trying to protect you from right now?
We are not our minds/brains. We are the conscious observer overviewing the thoughts. The awareness of what is going on. Our mind-brains pop up intrusive thoughts all the time that we’re shocked and confused by. Separating you, the pilot of your body, from the emotions as well as the automatic and unprovoked thoughts is what makes for better decisions, words, actions, etc.
The brain is a tool that is there to keep you safe. It’s going to do that through what it’s already familiar with. Even if that means keeping you miserable because there’s safety in the devil you know. It’s a muscle like any other. The more you practice and exercise it through intentional awareness of what’s going on in your mind-space, the better, clearer and more peaceful it becomes.
We think that if we open that “can of worms,” we’ll never be able to close it again, or we’ll never recover from the pain and despair. What you’ll find in practice, however, is that it often takes much less time than you expected to process through the thoughts and emotions. Yes, you may have some powerful breakdowns, but in an hour or two, maybe more, maybe less (again, sometimes it does take years to fully process something) you’ll feel lighter and better than you did before because you’re no longer carrying that weight around with you.
It gets easier and quicker the more you practice. If you haven’t done laundry in a while, and it’s piled up, you’re going to have to spend a solid chunck of time getting caught up on it before you can sit back, relax and then leisurely keep up with the new laundry being made.
Life, just like learning to swim or kayak, gets easier the more you surrender and flow with it and harder when you try and fight it.
There is no secret ingredient to doing the work we’ve been discussing. It’s just a practice that you get better at with time and you have to be patient with both yourself and others while we all make mistakes and grow from it.
Learn how to take life less seriously and have fun with what’s in front of you. It doesn’t have to be so stiff, and shouldn’t. Life flows like water and plays like air. Professional doesn’t have to mean stiff and fake.
